Modeling Space Charge in Beams for Heavy-Ion Fusion
نویسنده
چکیده
A new analytic model is presented which accurately estimates the radially averaged axial component of the space&age field of an axisymmetric heavy-ion beam in a cylindrical beam pipe. The model recovers details of the field near the beam ends that are overlooked by simpler models, and the results compare well to exact solutions of Poisson’s equation. Field values are shown for several simple beam profiles and are compared with values obtained from simpler models.

Chaotic Behavior and Halo Development in the Transverse Dynamics of Heavy Ion Beams
This paper reviews results obtained from recent analytical and numerical investigations of chaotic behavior and halo development induced by charge density inhomogeneities in the transverse dynamics of heavy ion beams. In particular, a test-particle model is used to investigate the charged-particle dynamics in an intense, matched, heavy ion beam with nonuniform density profile propagating throug...
متن کاملCurrent Status of the Recirculator Project at Llnl*
The Heavy Ion Fusion Group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has for several years been developing the world’s first circular ion induction accelerator designed to transport space charge dominated beams. Currently, the machine extends to 90 degrees, or 10 half-lattice periods(HLP) with induction cores for acceleration placed on every other HLP. Full current transport with acceptable emi...
متن کاملModeling Magnetic Field in Heavy ion Collisions Using Two Different Nuclear Charge Density Distributions
By studying the properties of matter during heavy-ion collisions, a better understanding of the Quark-Gluon plasma is possible. One of the main areas of this study is the calculation of the magnetic field, particularly how the values of conductivity affects this field and how the field strength changes with proper time. In matching the theoretical calculations with results obtained in lab, two diffe...
متن کاملHeavy Ion Fusion Systems Assessment Study
The Heavy Ion Fusion Systems Assessment (HIFSA) study was conducted with the specific objective of evaluating the prospects of using induction linac drivers to generate economical electrical power from inertial confinement fusion. The study used algorithmic models of representative components of a fusion system to identify favored areas in the multidimensional parameter space. The resulting cos...
متن کاملEffects of Misalignments on Space-charge-dominated Heavy Ion Beams in an Ire
Preliminary designs for the next large accelerator experiment envisioned for the Heavy Ion Fusion program, the IRE (Integrated Research Experiment) use an induction linac to accelerate multiple space-charge-dominated ion beams to an energy of several hundred MeV, and focus them at a target. This paper examines the effect of beam and quadrupole misalignments on beam emittance in the IRE. The dep...
